Miss Granny

Joyce E. Bernal's 2018 Filipino film follows Fely, an elderly woman carrying her family's burdens. After entering a strange photo studio she returns to her twenties and no one recognises her. The film does not present that second youth as an opportunity. Fely returns to the singing she gave up when young; the narrative also shows that this means moving away from her family, and does not make the choice easy. It is a remake of a film made in another country. Sarah Geronimo leads and the songs carry the film. The tone sits between comedy and melodrama and the family scenes take wide space. Who it's for: those who like Filipino musical comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an original narrative; the film follows its source closely.
