What Miyamoto Musashi: Showdown at Hannyazaka Heights Is About
The film is the second part of a series. Takezo, the man who will later be known as Miyamoto Musashi, comes out of Himeji Castle. He spent three years shut up there, reading and thinking. Now he sets out on the road itself, meaning to complete his mastery of the sword. Every fight he meets carries him a step further. The film builds combat not as spectacle but as a stage of training. The work is adapted from Yoshikawa’s novel. The hundred and six minutes are given to one section of that road. Kinnosuke Nakamura and Wakaba Irie take the leads, with Rentaro Mikuni also in the cast. Tomu Uchida’s Japanese film was completed in 1962.
