Hero of the Red Light District

There is a textile manufacturer from the provinces. He is successful at his work. His employees are attached to him for his kindness. But he cannot find a wife. The reason is a large birthmark on his face. The women of Yoshiwara turn him away too. In the end a woman called Tamarazu takes him on. Tamarazu is a peasant woman forced into indentured work. She shows him a rough but genuine warmth. The man takes that attention seriously. The account is built on that relationship. The film runs history and drama together. Chiezo Kataoka and Yoshie Mizutani take the leads, with Isao Kimura and Minoru Chiaki also in the cast, in Tomu Uchida’s Japanese film of 1960.
