What Modest Reception Is About

Two people from the city drive through a mountainous region with sacks of money in their car and hand it out to the poor people they meet. But the money is not free: each time they ask for something strange, humiliating or pointless, and watch to see whether the person will do it. Who the two are, why they set out and what binds them stays unclear throughout, and the stories they tell do not agree with one another. The line between charity and cruelty is slowly rubbed out. Mani Haghighi’s hundred minute Iranian film has the director himself and Taraneh Alidoosti in the leads; it was completed in 2013.
