Matko, a small-time Romani smuggler living on the Danube, has a job go wrong and must marry off his son Zare to a gangster's dwarf sister to clear the debt. Zare being in love with Ida, a barmaid, makes it considerably worse. Kusturica was not going to make this. After the hostile reception to Underground, which had won the Palme d'Or, he announced he was giving up filmmaking, then changed his mind. The project had actually begun as a documentary about Gypsy music called Musika Akrobatika before turning into fiction. He won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at Venice. Janet Maslin described it as a mad scramble through the Felliniesque realm of Kusturica's imagination. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 82 percent and Metacritic at 73. Who it is for: viewers who love loud, chaotic, music-driven Balkan comedy. Who it is not for: anyone wanting quiet. The film barely stops making noise, and the pace wears some people out.
