In the middle of a war in the Balkans, a milkman crosses to the front each morning on a donkey, passing between the bullets and coming back alive every time. There is a woman waiting for him in the village and life looks settled. Then a mysterious Italian woman arrives and everything scatters. The two of them take to the road with people behind them.
