Award records have Emir Kusturica standing as a director, yet Sight and Sound carries a piece assessing him as an actor: Michael Witt writes that in Patrice Leconte's The Widow of Saint-Pierre he looks entirely at ease inside the wild but gentle Neel, and our catalogue puts him second in that film's credits. In the same magazine John Wrathall describes a break: worn out by the argument around Underground, he announced in 1995 that he was giving up cinema, and came back with Black Cat, White Cat. On the directing side the Italian academy made him a joint nominee for foreign director in 1986, for When Father Was Away on Business; a Special Jury Prize from the Berlinale went to Arizona Dream in 1993, and the Spirits nominated Underground for foreign film in 1998. Those last two name the film. The Spanish academy nominated Black Cat, White Cat in 2000 for the European film category under the title Gato negro, gato blanco. Twelve of the seventeen works we hold he directed himself.
