What The Widow of Saint-Pierre Is About
1850, on Saint-Pierre, a small French island in the North Atlantic. A murder is committed and two fishermen are arrested; one dies in custody, and the other, Neel Auguste, is sentenced to the guillotine. The island has neither a guillotine nor an executioner, and both must be sent from the mainland. While they wait, Neel is placed in the custody of an army captain. The captain's wife takes an interest in him, teaches him a trade, and in time the town accepts him. Then the guillotine arrives. Patrice Leconte directs. In French the guillotine is called the widow, which is where the title comes from. Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche and Emir Kusturica star.
