What Molokai: The Story of Father Damien Is About
Paul Cox’s 1999 film is about Damien, the Belgian priest who volunteered in the nineteenth century for the Kalaupapa leprosy settlement on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, played here by David Wenham. He lived there for fifteen years and died there. The film is not interested in him as a saint; it shows a stubborn man in permanent friction with a church and a colonial administration that would both prefer the settlement were not discussed. Sam Neill, Derek Jacobi, Alice Krige and Kris Kristofferson appear alongside him. The project came from the producer Tharsi Vanhuysse, who took it up after Damien’s beatification in 1995. Damien reached Kalaupapa in 1873, died of the disease in 1889 and was canonised in 2009.
