What Mother Is About
A young girl tells the story of her mother trying to keep the family laundry going after the war. Deaths, debts, a household coming apart, and a mother carrying all of it without letting it show. Mikio Naruse directed and Yoko Mizuki wrote the screenplay, working from a student essay that had won a school competition. Kinuyo Tanaka plays the mother and Kyoko Kagawa the daughter. Donald Richie counted it among Naruse’s best and also found it unusual for him, since the inevitable tragedy that hangs over his characters does not arrive here. Tadao Sato set it beside two other films of 1952, Mizoguchi’s The Life of Oharu and Kurosawa’s Ikiru, and called the three of them the start of the second golden age of Japanese cinema.
