Mother of 1084

Sujata works at a bank. She is the mother of a middle class family in Calcutta. The account is set at the start of the seventies. One morning the police come to the door. Her son Brati has been killed. They go to identify the body. Sujata has trouble taking in what happened. She did not know what her son had been doing. Afterwards she looks for his friends. She speaks with them one by one. A girlfriend turns up as well, called Nandini. As she talks she learns that Brati was inside a political movement. The account comes from the novel by Mahasweta Devi. Jaya Bachchan and Anupam Kher take the leads, with Nandita Das and Seema Biswas also in the cast, in Govind Nihalani’s Indian film of 1998.
