Mounam Pesiyadhe

Ameer's 2002 Tamil film follows Gautham, who runs a restaurant. He falls in love with Sandhya, the cousin of his friend Kannan; then he learns that Kannan's family want the two of them married, and he is caught between friendship and love. The subject is the cost of not speaking. Gautham does not say what he feels, Sandhya does not explain her situation and Kannan knows nothing; the problem arises not from a conflict but from all three staying silent. Suriya leads, early in his career, and Trisha reached a wide audience with this film. It is Ameer's first feature and the narrative is measured by the standards of mainstream Tamil cinema; there are song breaks but no outsized set pieces. Who it's for: those who like 2000s Tamil romantic drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a fast-moving story; the film postpones its resolution for a long time.
