Vladimir Zamanskiy What Mournful Unconcern Is About
The film takes place during the First World War in a mansion oddly shaped like an ark, and in spirit it reflects the fiercely antiwar play that inspired it. A large company of family and friends has gathered at this country house to dance, drink and converse, and their talk is full of learned references and quotations. For all their apparent refinement, what occupies them is simple. Disquieting images break that misplaced calm: documentary footage of starving children, scenes from the daily life of the play’s author, and a corpse coming to life on an autopsy table. The music deliberately does not belong to the period and points at the film’s message from the opposite direction. Ramaz Chkhikvadze plays the lead in Aleksandr Sokurov’s hundred and ten minute Soviet film, completed in 1987.
