What Moscow Elegy Is About
Aleksandr Sokurov's documentary about Andrei Tarkovsky. It was first conceived to mark Tarkovsky's fiftieth birthday; trouble with the Soviet authorities over its form and content held it up for years, and it was finished after Tarkovsky's death. What began as a birthday piece therefore turned into an elegy. Sokurov holds for a long time on archive material, footage of Tarkovsky at work, and rooms left empty, building the film out of silence and duration rather than information. The fact that sources give the film two different years, 1987 and 1988, is itself a trace of that delay. Tonino Guerra and Sven Nykvist appear in it as well.
