What Oriental Elegy Is About
The film moves like the journey of a voice walking in darkness on an island wrapped in fog. The narrator enters the houses of a fishing village one by one; the old people sitting inside speak of their lives, of what they have lost and of the day’s work. The talk goes on without explanation, in half sentences, and the image almost never comes clear. At the end the narrator asks a woman what happiness is, and the answer she gives settles nothing. Aleksandr Sokurov’s forty five minute Russian documentary was shot in Japan; it was completed in 1996 and belongs to the director’s series of elegies.
