Mumu

Mo Sha's 2025 Chinese film follows the life of a deaf father and his young daughter. Mumu is the bridge between her father and the outside world; she interprets in job interviews, answers the telephone and carries a responsibility beyond her years. The turning point is the girl growing up. Mumu has to join the hearing world and her father loses that arrangement; the narrative shows this not as a farewell but through questions of custody and daily subsistence. Zhang Yixing plays the father and the sign language scenes take wide space. The narrative does not build deafness as a story of disability; the real problem is institutions refusing to communicate. Who it's for: those who like Chinese family drama and father and daughter narratives. Who it's not for: viewers put off by emotional steering; the film does this openly in its final section.
