What Persian Lessons Is About
A young Belgian Jew taken to a camp in 1942 says he is Persian to avoid being shot. An officer at the camp intends to open a restaurant in Tehran after the war and needs him to teach him the language. He does not speak Persian. Every day he has to remember the words he invented, and he begins building them from the names of the prisoners in the camp. From that the film draws a very hard idea: the invented language becomes a list of names. Vadim Perelman directed, with Nahuel Perez Biscayart and Lars Eidinger. It is adapted from a German short story and the events are fictional. A real warning: executions and camp violence are shown directly. The closing section is also emotionally very heavy.
