What Murder at the Gallop Is About
Margaret Rutherford's Miss Marple is out collecting for charity when an old man falls down his own staircase, and she decides at once that it was not a fall. The trail leads to a riding hotel where the family has gathered, and to Robert Morley as its proprietor, who becomes her comic opposite number. The source is the odd part: the film is built on Agatha Christie's After the Funeral, which is a Poirot novel, and the studio simply swapped in Marple. Christie disliked the series. Rutherford, meanwhile, pressed so much of herself onto the part that for many viewers she is still the definitive Marple. It is short and shot in black and white. Who it is for: viewers who enjoy sixties British murder comedies and Rutherford's performance. Who it is not for: anyone wanting fidelity to the book.
