What Murder, Inc. Is About
In the Brooklyn of the 1930s a structure is set up to handle the killing for organised crime: murder on order, with books kept, run like a company. The film traces its rise and fall through the boss, Lepke, and the gunman Abe Reles. A couple caught between them can find nowhere to go. Directed together by Burt Balaban and Stuart Rosenberg, the film comes out of a real case file. The organisation of murder as a service and of killing as a trade is shown here without any dressing up. Peter Falk was nominated for the Academy Award for best supporting actor as Abe Reles, and the part opened his career. It was also Rosenberg's first feature; he would go on to make Cool Hand Luke.
