What Murphy's Romance Is About
Murphy's Romance, directed by Martin Ritt, is an American film about Emma, a divorced single mother who moves to a small Arizona town, and her friendship with the gruff but warm local pharmacist Murphy, which slowly turns into romance. The screenplay is adapted from a 1980 novella by Max Schott, but diverges significantly from the source: in Schott's story, Murphy and Emma remain only platonic friends, and the film's romantic ending does not exist in the source material. James Garner received the only Academy Award nomination of his career for the film, which expanded to wide release after a limited run secured its Oscar eligibility. Who it's for: anyone curious about an American film that turns a purely platonic friendship from its source story into a romance, earning James Garner the only Oscar nomination of his career. Who it's not for: those wanting a faithful adaptation of the source material, since the film fundamentally changes the story's ending.
