What My Dad, the Socialist Kulak Is About

The year is 1945; the war is over and soldiers from the disbanded armies are coming home. Of Joze Malek there is still no word. His wife Mimika and their children Tincek and Olga know only one thing about him: he deserted the German army and went over to the Soviet Red Army. As the waiting drags on, a new period settles over the country. The word kulak in the title was a label used for well off peasants in the socialist years. The account takes up that label in a comic tone and speaks from inside the daily life of the family. By putting one family at the centre it shows a large history from inside a small house. Polde Bibič, Milena Zupančič and Ivo Ban appear in Matjaž Klopčič’s hundred minute Yugoslav film, completed in 1987.
