What My Friend from Faro Is About
Melanie, twenty two and known to everyone as Mel, lives near Münster; she works packing at a catering plant by the airport, lives with her father and her older brother and does not feel she belongs there. With her short hair and her clothes she is often taken for a boy, and when Jenny, a fourteen year old hitchhiker, takes her for one too, Mel does not correct her and introduces herself as Miguel from Faro in Portugal. The girl falls in love with this Miguel while Mel finds for the first time the ease of being someone else; but as the lie grows there is nowhere left to carry it. Nana Neul’s ninety one minute German film is her first feature; Anjorka Strechel plays Mel and Lucie Hollmann plays Jenny. It was shown at Max Ophüls on 16 January 2008 and won the screenplay award there.
