What My Friend Rashed Is About
The Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 seen through a group of schoolchildren in a small town. Rashed, the friend of the narrator Ibu, is the strangest and the bravest boy in the class, and he is the first to grasp what is happening when the Pakistani army enters the town and the fighting starts. In time the children begin helping the resistance, the Mukti Bahini, and the line between play and reality disappears. Morshedul Islam adapted Muhammad Zafar Iqbal’s novel of the same name. Telling the war from a child’s point of view gives the film both plainness and weight; instead of manufacturing heroism it shows what the children do not understand. It opened in April 2011 and reached a wide audience in Bangladesh.
