My Left Eye Sees Ghosts

This 2002 film by Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai mixes genres with an ease particular to Hong Kong cinema. May, spoiled and widowed shortly after marrying a rich man, starts seeing ghosts with her left eye after a car accident, among them a former classmate. Comedy, horror and romance trade places within the same scene, and the film uses that inconsistency as a method rather than a fault. Sammi Cheng and Lau Ching-Wan are among the best pairings in the romantic comedies To and Wai made together. The last section goes somewhere unexpectedly emotional and takes the question of death out of its comic disguise. Cheng won the best actress award at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the role. Who it's for: viewers who like Hong Kong genre mixing, ghost comedies, and the Cheng and Lau pairing. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a consistent genre experience, or troubled by grief and death placed inside comedy.
