What My Memories of Old Beijing Is About
In the late 1920s, six-year-old Yingzi moves to Beijing with her family. Wandering the hutongs she comes to know three people: a woman who waits at the end of the lane for the daughter she lost, a young man hiding out on a rubbish tip, and the nanny who works in their house. Each of the three stories ends somewhere the child does not understand. Yingzi only watches. Wu Yigong directed the film from Lin Haiyin's autobiographical novel, and it became one of the best loved Chinese productions of the period after the Cultural Revolution. The telling builds no plot; three separate farewells come one after another. The child's point of view is never broken: no explanation, no commentary, only what is seen. The tone is grave and slow.
