My Policeman

Brighton in the 1950s. Marion, a schoolteacher, is in love with Tom, a policeman, while Tom is involved with Patrick, a museum curator. Under the laws and pressure of the period Tom marries Marion. Marion gives in to jealousy and exposes Patrick; he is arrested and all three lives are permanently damaged. Michael Grandage directed, from Bethan Roberts's 2012 novel. Harry Styles plays Tom, Emma Corrin plays Marion and David Dawson plays Patrick. It screened at Toronto in 2022, where the cast took the festival's Tribute Award for Performance, the first time the honour went to an ensemble rather than an individual. It opened in limited release and on Amazon Prime Video on 4 November 2022. The reception was uneven. Critics praised Dawson's performance and were hard on the direction and the screenplay. Who it is for: viewers who like period drama and are curious about Dawson's work. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a lot from Styles as an actor. That is precisely the film's most argued-over point.
