What My Side of the Mountain Is About
Thirteen-year-old Sam Gribley reads Thoreau and does not want to live in the city. When the summer trip his parents promised falls through, he takes his pack and goes alone into the woods. He builds himself a shelter there and learns to make fire, find food and prepare for winter. The first winter he spends on his own tests everything. James B. Clark's film was adapted from Jean Craighead George's children's novel and shot in the Canadian woods. The telling is interested in daily work more than in adventure: shelter, food, weather. Sam's idea of self-sufficiency is put to the test too; by the end solitude has become a question rather than a prize. It was made for children without being made cute.
