What My Son the Fanatic Is About
Parvez, a Pakistani born taxi driver in the north of England, keeps his distance from religion, drinks, likes jazz and wants his son Farid to build a good life. But Farid breaks off his engagement, turns to a rigid reading of the faith, brings men his father does not know into the house and begins to condemn the way his father lives. Around the same time Parvez grows close to Bettina, one of his passengers; she works as a sex worker, and the relationship leaves him exposed both to his son and to his neighbourhood. Udayan Prasad’s eighty eight minute British film was made from a screenplay Hanif Kureishi adapted from his own short story. Om Puri plays Parvez, Rachel Griffiths plays Bettina and Akbar Kurtha plays Farid. It was completed in 1997.
