What My Summer of Love Is About
In a Yorkshire town a girl whose brother has come out of prison and turned the house into a place of worship becomes friends with a wealthy girl home from boarding school. Each tells the other a version of her life that is not true. The film follows the relationship across one summer and keeps the difference of class constantly felt without ever stating it. The narrative leaves who is using whom unresolved to the end, and the close settles it. Pawel Pawlikowski directed, with Natalie Press and Emily Blunt in one of Blunt's first major roles. A real warning: there is drug use, religious fanaticism and an act of violence. The ending is not sad but unsettling.
