What Mystify: Michael Hutchence Is About
Richard Lowenstein's 2019 documentary tells the life of INXS singer Michael Hutchence from the position of someone who knew him well; Lowenstein directed his videos for years. The film steps outside the standard rock documentary shape, using audio recordings, home video and archive rather than talking heads. At its centre is an episode that had not been widely understood. Assaulted in Copenhagen in 1992, Hutchence suffered a serious head injury and lost his senses of smell and taste, and the film argues that the sudden rages, depression and increasing drug use of his final years followed directly from that damage. Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen and Bono are among those who speak. His death in 1997 is reread inside that frame. Who it's for: viewers who like music documentary and the rock history of the eighties and nineties. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not sit close to suicide and substance use.
