What National Bird Is About
Three former members of the American military who served in the drone programme speak. Heather and Lisa worked in the Air Force and Daniel was a signals intelligence analyst. All three are trying to live with what they saw after leaving the programme. Daniel appears in the film by first name only, with no surname given. What they describe covers the whole chain, from the selection of a target to the decision to strike. Sonia Kennebeck's documentary screened at the Berlin Film Festival and the director received the Ridenhour Documentary Film Prize the following year. The film pushes back against the account that presents drone warfare as remote, clean work; its subject is the distance between what is seen on a screen and what is happening on the ground. After the film, Daniel Hale was prosecuted for leaking classified documents and was sentenced to prison in 2021.
