National Theatre Live: A Streetcar Named Desire

This is a recording of the Young Vic staging of A Streetcar Named Desire, transferred to cinemas. Gillian Anderson plays Blanche DuBois, Ben Foster plays Stanley Kowalski and Vanessa Kirby plays Stella. The set sits on a platform that turns slowly throughout the play, so as the audience completes the circle they also see that the characters have nowhere to go. Anderson's Blanche is harder than the classic readings. Fragility is presented here entirely as performance, and the collapse comes from exhaustion rather than delicacy. Foster's Stanley keeps physical threat permanently visible. As a theatre recording the cinematic language is limited. The cameras observe the stage rather than interpreting it, which foregrounds the acting but means returning to the same angles for long stretches. Who it's for: those interested in Tennessee Williams and in contemporary British stage interpretation. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a film adaptation; this is a recorded theatre performance, not a film.
