What Nerves Is About
The film sets out to capture an epidemic of nerves, said to be brought on by war and hardship and to be driving people out of their minds. It was shot on location in Munich in the Germany of 1919 and sets people from every level of society beside one another: Roloff, a factory owner who loses his reason in the face of catastrophe and social upheaval; John, a teacher who becomes a hero of the crowds; and Marja, who turns into a radical. The account is after a state of mind rather than realism, which is why it is counted among the early works of expressionist cinema. Robert Reinert’s hundred and ten minute silent film was completed in 1919.
