What Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary Is About
Jack Bennett's 2019 documentary covers the making of Galaxy Quest and the place it later came to hold. When it opened in 1999 it was taken for a comedy mocking science fiction fandom; over time it came to be read both as one of the fondest accounts of that fandom and as a tribute to the genre. The documentary describes the trouble during production: a change of director, arguments over casting and the studio's uncertainty about the film's tone. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and most of the cast speak, and what they say about Alan Rickman's part is its most interesting section. People from the Star Trek world also give their view of the film. The presentation is aimed at fans and celebratory, with no critical distance. Who it's for: people who love the film and anyone curious about how things were made. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen it; the documentary assumes you have.
