What New York Doll Is About
Arthur Kane was the bass player in the New York Dolls. After the band broke up in 1975 he spent years working as a clerk at the Mormon Church, fighting alcohol and living quietly. When Morrissey arranged a concert in London for the surviving members in 2004, Kane found himself back with David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain after thirty years. Greg Whiteley’s documentary follows the whole thing from rehearsal to concert, keeping its attention on the man rather than the show. Kane died on 13 July 2004, not long after the reunion. Clem Burke, Bob Geldof and Nina Antonia, who wrote the band’s biography, are among those who speak.
