Mitt

Greg Whiteley's documentary follows Mitt Romney's 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. Whiteley first filmed the family in 2006, at a gathering where they were arguing over whether Romney should run at all, and stayed with his camera for six years. The film has no interest in campaign strategy or policy; it stays in hotel rooms, on planes and at family tables. Romney calculating his own defeat in advance and speaking plainly to his children is markedly unlike his public image, and that gap is what the film is actually about. Access to the campaign staff was never granted, which is why the whole account is built from inside the family. It premiered at Sundance and went out on Netflix. Who it's for: viewers who want the private side of political life rather than the backroom one. Who it's not for: anyone expecting political analysis or hard questions; the film is never tough on its subject.
