What Niagara, Niagara Is About
Marcy has Tourette syndrome. Seth is a young man who belongs to nobody and has not managed to build a life. The two meet while shoplifting. Something forms quickly between them and they set out together for Canada; Marcy is after a doll that is no longer made. Bob Gosse's American film does not turn Tourette's into material for oddity; it shows what makes Marcy's life hard and how people around her react. Robin Tunney won the best actress award at Venice in 1997 for the part. Henry Thomas plays Seth. The telling does not romanticise them; their leaving is not an escape but a dead end.
