What L'Avventura Is About
Michelangelo Antonioni's 1960 film follows a woman who disappears on an island during a boat trip. Her friend and her lover search for her. During the search they draw closer. The film leaves the missing woman unresolved; the narrative makes how the search is forgotten its real subject. Monica Vitti leads. It was booed at its Cannes premiere and later counted a turning point. It was shot in Sicily. Who it's for: those who like slow cinema built on absence. Who it's not for: viewers waiting for the mystery to be solved; the film never answers it.
