L'Eclisse

A woman leaves the man she has been with for years and soon meets someone who works at the stock exchange. A relationship begins, though neither is quite willing. The film shows the parting and the coming together at the same distance; the subject is not that two people cannot touch each other but that nothing matters enough to either of them. The panic on the exchange floor and the shots of empty streets deliver the same feeling at two scales. The ending is what it is known for: in the last seven minutes neither character appears, and the camera watches the corner where they were to meet until evening falls. Michelangelo Antonioni directed, with Monica Vitti and Alain Delon. It took a special jury prize at Cannes.
