No way, Spider

Rogerio Sganzerla's 1970 Brazilian film follows a banker who lives with three women. The man is a caricature of the Brazilian bourgeoisie, and while following his days the narrative makes no attempt to build a story. The film proceeds as an essay. The dialogue does not connect, scenes break off and the sound is deliberately coarsened; the aim is to unsettle the viewer and break the expectation of narrative. Sganzerla belonged to the marginal cinema movement and made this film under the military dictatorship. The black humour attaches directly to a criticism of class; the mental condition of the country's wealthy is the real subject. Helena Ignez is in the cast. Who it's for: those who like the Brazilian avant-garde and political experimental cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting narrative; the film deliberately refuses it and is hard to watch.
