Nosso Sonho

Two boys grow up in the same neighbourhood near Rio de Janeiro. Claudinho and Buchecha start making music; they have no equipment, no way of recording, and they sing at parties in the district. Then they put out a cassette and are known across the country almost overnight. Funk had until then been listened to only in the outer neighbourhoods, and their songs crossed that line. They work together for years. Then there is a road accident. Eduardo Albergaria directs. Juan Paiva and Lucas Penteado take the leads. The story is real. Claudinho and Buchecha became the best known duo in Brazilian funk; Claudinho died in a car crash in 2002. The subject is friendship as much as music; the relationship between the two is at the centre and how fame strained it is shown. The origins of Brazilian funk and how the neighbourhood parties worked are given in detail; the music sits in the narrative as a matter of class. The songs are used in their original recordings and are still widely known in Brazil. Its limit is structure; it follows the shape of the music biography and the events are listed quickly. Who it is for: viewers who like music biography and Brazilian popular culture. Who it is not for: the narrative is formulaic, the emotional register is high, and the context is missing for anyone who does not know the duo.
