What Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy) Is About
Eric Idle turned Monty Python's Life of Brian into an oratorio. The subject is the same: Mandy made pregnant by a Roman soldier, Brian being born and joining the People's Front of Judea without meaning to, falling in love with Judith, being mistaken for a Messiah and finally being sentenced to crucifixion. This time the telling runs on a chorus, an orchestra and soloists. The music is the parody itself: there are references to everything from Handel to a Mozart duet, from the tradition of Nine Lessons and Carols to an imitation of Bob Dylan. The recording was made at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2009; it was Monty Python's fortieth anniversary and some of the group came on stage: Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Carol Cleveland. The finale is, predictably, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. Ninety-two minutes.
