Nudo Mixteco

Ángeles Cruz's 2021 Mexican film is set in a village in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca. Three people who migrated years earlier return during the fiesta. The three stories cross in the village square. One is a woman who wants to live with a woman, one a woman who built a life in her husband's absence, one a mother trying to protect her daughter; the narrative shows the village's own way of deciding and brings in no solution from outside. Some of the cast are local and parts of the film are in Mixtec. The tone is measured and the violence stays outside the frame. Who it's for: viewers of Mexican independent cinema and Indigenous community narratives. Who it's not for: viewers for whom child abuse would be difficult; one of the stories takes it up directly.
