What Nurse Edith Cavell Is About

Edith Cavell is a British nurse working at a hospital in Brussels during the First World War. When the son of a former patient escapes from a German prison camp she helps him get across to Holland. Faced with the number of soldiers held in the camps, she does not leave it at one. With a group who think as she does she builds an arrangement for organising escapes. All of it has to be kept from the Germans. Cavell was a real person; she was arrested in 1915 and shot by a firing squad the same year. The film tells her story from the middle of the war rather than from before it. Anna Neagle takes the lead in Herbert Wilcox’s American film of 1939.
