What Yellow Canary Is About
In 1940 Sally Maitland has to leave England because she is taken for a Nazi sympathiser; everyone including her well off family has turned their back on her. On the ship to Halifax in Canada two men take an interest in her: Jan Orloch, a Polish aristocrat, and Jimmy Garrick, an awkward British intelligence officer. She is warmer towards Orloch and agrees to meet his mother in Halifax. But once they arrive it becomes clear that nobody is who they say they are. It was made while the war was still on and builds its spy story together with the propaganda needs of the day. Anna Neagle plays the lead in Herbert Wilcox’s ninety four minute British film, completed in 1943.
