What Of Human Bondage Is About
Philip Carey, a medical student, attaches himself to Mildred Rogers, a waitress. The affair breaks off when her constant unfaithfulness becomes clear, and even when she leaves her job and starts working as a prostitute he cannot let go of her. The production of this adaptation of Somerset Maugham’s novel was chaotic: Henry Hathaway left after a single day of shooting, the screenwriter Bryan Forbes took over directing for a while, and Ken Hughes finished it. Forbes was also removed from the cast and replaced by Jack Hedley. Editing dragged on for months and the film appeared late in 1964, nearly a year behind schedule, and failed commercially and critically. Laurence Harvey plays Philip and Kim Novak plays Mildred.
