What The Long Haul Is About

Harry stayed in Britain instead of going home to America after the war, and takes work driving a lorry to keep his wife Connie and their child. The work is hard and the money is short. Before long he runs into a gang that smuggles goods, and is drawn into it by blackmail. There is also the boss's woman. Victor Mature and Diana Dors take the leads in Ken Hughes's British noir. The telling shows crime not as adventure but as the consequence of being short of money: Harry is never willing at any stage, only obliged at every step. Lorry roads, warehouses and night garages are the film's real locations. The ending is heavy and offers no way out.
