What Wicked as They Come Is About
A woman from a poor district uses the men who come her way in order to rise in society. She treats her looks and their gullibility as instruments; at every step she moves on to someone wealthier and leaves broken lives behind her. But the higher she climbs, the less her past lets go of her. The film does not present her as a monster either; where she came from and why she chose this road are taken into the account as well. It is one of the British films of the fifties that treated moving up a class from a hard angle. Arlene Dahl plays the lead in Ken Hughes’s ninety four minute British film, completed in 1956.
