What Off Screen Is About

On 11 March 2002 a man took the head of security and seventeen other people hostage in the tallest building in Amsterdam. All he wanted was to speak to the head of Philips’s sound and vision division; he believed there were hidden codes in the black bars of widescreen broadcasts and that consumers were being worked on through them. Pieter Kuijpers builds his film out of that real incident, but not as a police story: he looks at how a fifty-nine-year-old bus driver arrived at this point. He declines to make the man ridiculous and takes what is happening inside his head seriously. Jan Decleir and Jeroen Krabbé lead.
