Michel Sluysmans What Love is the Word Is About
The year is 1978, the year Grease reached the screen. The film fits the magic of a first love and the misery of a first loss into the same summer, with the funny and the painful sitting side by side. Directed by Pieter Kuijpers, this Dutch production builds provincial youth at the end of the seventies out of music, clothes and the particular optimism of those years. Bram van Schie and Ella-June Henrard star. What stands out most is that it handles the illness in the young people’s own language rather than turning it into thick melodrama.
